Congratulation! The day has arrived.

You are of course glad that you have been selected among tens or hundreds of applicants for this job. I am sure you are anxious to start your career and really look forward to your first day at work.

It is O.K. to feel some level of stress at this point of time. Well, this is human nature. You are going into a strange environment and spend most of your waking hours there. You are not sure how is your boss going to be.

Doubts:
Is he kind or difficult to deal with?
Is he helpful in imparting his knowledge and skills to you?

Recall your first day in the Primary School, first day in Secondary or College, how did you feel? It is not surprising that you have certain level of anxiety. Be cool and calm and have a good night sleep the day before your first day.

I like to give you some useful tips to bear in mind once you are accepted for the job and eagerly waiting for the arrival of the first big day:-

1) FIND OUT ABOUT YOUR EMPLOYER

Gather as much information as you can either via the internet or other sources to know even deeper about your employer. Keep abreast of the latest development in the market about your company products or services.

It would be really helpful also to find out who is who in the organization if you can.

2) BE EARLY FOR WORK AND LATE TO GO HOME

Arrive at least 15 minutes before your official starting time. This will leave a good impression for your boss and your fellow colleagues. Never, never be late especially for your first crucial day.

First impression counts very much in this situation. When you are early, you give the impression that you are enthusiastic about your job.

Do not knock off immediately after your working hours. Show interest by staying at least half-an hour to one hour so as to digest or go through the materials handed to you during orientation.

3) BE COURTEOUS

It is vital to have good EQ. Therefore, be polite to everyone that you come into contact with. Be polite also to the Receptionist or office cleaner in your office. Politeness can go a long way and people do talk about the new staff.

4) BE PROPERLY DRESSED

By now you would have some ideas about the dress code of the company as you have attended at least one interview there. The rule of thump is that you put on business attire as you would be introduced to most the key people whom you are going to work with in your very first day. So, first impression counts.

5) HAVE A NOTEPAD ON HAND

Jot down important information like the names of person that you are going to work with closely. This is useful when you are introduced to many parties as you can't possibly remember every name.

6) BE PREPARED TO ACCEPT LUNCH INVITATION

EQ is built the minute you get to know people in the organization. Very often, you are invited by your superior or colleagues for lunch on your first day. Accept the invitation as this is very good opportunity to get to know more about your boss or colleagues.

7) BUY LUNCH FOR COLLEAGUES

It is a good move for you to buy lunch for different colleagues just so that you have the opportunity to get to know them even better. Be polite and humble and always be keen to listen to their story about the organization. Get into the grape vines and immerse yourself with the happenings in the company as fast as you could.
