INTRODUCTION

You may have top of the world feelings now as you have just completed your many years of education. No more books, no more lectures and no more examinations! This is certainly a cause of celebration now that you have reached a new point of life.

Yes. Indeed. You are a free man now. There are so many things you can do : start your career, get your first job or even thinking of starting your own business. Now is the time. You are free to choose the life you want to lead. But the fact is whatever route you may decide, there is so much to learn and begin the next chapter of your life.

IQ + EQ

Remember your paper qualification is merely a passport and is far from a guarantee of your success. Whatever you do from this day onwards is entirely a new record of your own. It does not matter if you have how many A's in the past as you will be judged by your work performance.

After you get your job, it is a challenge to ensure that you do the right thing to stay employed or even get promoted.

In the working life, the following equation applies:-

Performance = IQ + EQ

IQ, intelligent quotient refers to your technical competency and skills.

EQ which stands for emotional quotient is a measure of how well you cope with the working relations with whom you come into contacts with. They can be your boss, your peers, your subordinates or even your suppliers.

As you progress in your career, the need for you to "get results through others" has become more and more essential. Therefore, your EQ skills like the ability to motivate your team to reach set objectives and getting things done through your team are highly important in determining your ultimate achievements.

LIFELONG LEARNING

Another useful advice I want to share with you is that please treat learning as a life long process. The fact that you have just graduated does not mean that you can throw away your books now. In fact, the life journey has just begun. You need to keep abreast of development around you. So, read up as much as you can not only in your chosen field but also in other areas so that you can train yourself to see a bigger picture and appreciate the work of your colleagues from other departments.

BE A WELL ROUNDED PERSON

All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy! Your working life is going to be spreading across a few decades. Therefore, this is a marathon - you can't afford to suffer a burn out too soon. The best way I figure out is to have in place a practical exercise program to keep fit, to refresh, de- stress and recharge our batteries. Don't forget to set some time also to look for and get to know your life long partner. If you are already married, plan time for your spouse and children as these are important people in your life.
